Bio

Raised in the high desert mountains of Idaho and currently based in Los Angeles, Heather Hansen is a multi-media artist whose work draws inspiration in tension between the feral and the tamed, contained and wild spaces. Her strong connection to the wilderness is palpable in her land art, kinetic drawing, sculpture, and filmmaking.

In her formative years as a young artist she trained under Butoh Masters, Kazuo and Yoshito Ohno and performed and studied with many leading butoh teachers and companies in Japan. Her kinetic drawings are informed by this training as well as influences from the Gutai art movement. For Hansen, process is art, the body is the tool.

She has exhibited and performed in notable spaces including: the Lehmbruck Museum; Duisburg Germany;  Sejong Center, Seoul, Korea; The Louisiana Art and Science museum; and Springplace, NYC. She has been featured in publications such as Juxtapoz, Hi-fructose, NPR, and Wired, and has become part of educational curricula in textbooks around the world.

Most recently, her work as an art director was featured in the 2024 Whitney Biennial, and her films were displayed in the “Dancing in the Museum” exhibition with CAFA Art Museum, Beijing China.
